Memory & Metacognition Updates – A Year Later
Jonathan Firth's Memory & Metacognition Updates #38
I began these updates in April 2022, just after the Easter holidays. They’ve now been running for exactly one year. 🎂
Looking back, I guess I’m surprised that I’ve always somehow managed to find the time to write a weekly update (at least in term time), and that this network has steadily grown from basically no subscribers to over 500. I’ve enjoyed it a lot. Thank you for being part of it!!
Future Focus
While I’ve made changes over time, the focus of the updates has remained (of course) on memory and metacognition. Related topics such as creativity and generative learning seem to have gone down well too.
I’ve had good feedback on my explainers of research studies, and I’m happy to keep sharing those most weeks, with links to the original papers where possible.
Going forward, I’d like these updates to be as useful as possible. I’m happy to hear more about what you want to read.
I’m also keen to keep communicating with other educators. It’s great when I hear back from readers, and sometimes these connections can grow into really exciting partnerships.
Maybe you’d be interested in exploring shared research and study opportunities in the future? Or developing some CPD, or writing together…? I am open to many types of project, so do feel free to get in touch!
Free PSHE Event
I’m running a free event in Glasgow next month.
It’s focused on PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education), and I’m running it with my colleague Dr Dillon Landi, an expert on health education. As you might guess, my contribution focuses on issues such as study skills and self-regulated learning:
Personal, Social and Health Education Network: Working Together to Improve Health & Wellbeing
The event takes place on campus at the University of Strathclyde on the morning of Thursday the 11th of May, 2023. Check it out and register for free here: https://engage.strath.ac.uk/event/1010
Ok, that’s it for now. All the best for the coming term/semester!

p.s. you might be aware that Substack has recently begun a Twitter-esque social media site called Notes. It will be handy for sharing things that don’t require a full newsletter – quotes, research links, teaching ideas, and so on. I’d love for you to join me there. Check it out below.
